In search of Penelope
I am fascinated by the stories that are captured within our
names, they are so much more than mere nouns. This past year I have spent some
time journeying with my own name - Penelope. A name which if I am honest I have struggled
to connect with throughout my life. As I read Sharon Blackie’s wonderful book If Women Rose Rooted I find myself
wondering if this struggle to connect is not my struggle but one that runs much
deeper. A struggle many women have endured and one that has kept us from
stepping into and owning our true power.
With the light beginning to return I am setting my compass to the
direction of Earth. It is time to reroot, to connect to the stories of my ancestors
and the cup of knowledge they each carried within them. Through my matrilineal
line lies a tap root and a route to the water of the wellspring.
